Keeping your tyres properly inflated will both save you money and improve your safety on the road – underinflated tyres result in worse fuel efficiency and increase stopping distances and the risk of aquaplaning. The risk can be even greater in heavier vehicles with larger load weights than your average family car.

Face your phone down

Toyota Ireland has launched a new mobile app that is designed to save lives on Ireland’s roads by changing driver behaviour.

Face It Down, available on iOS and Android, has been launched in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Topaz. The app rewards drivers who put their phone face down while driving with points that can be redeemed for complimentary hot drinks at Re Store locations around the country.

Volkswagen’s talking cars

Volkswagen pWLAN

Before the decade is out, cars will be able to talk to each other while out and about. Not like in Pixar’s Cars, but using a new technology known as pWLAN, developed by Volkswagen. Due to be fitted to the first models in 2019, pWLAN will allow for the exchange of information between cars and transport infrastructure (like traffic lights) within a 500m range, such as current traffic and accidents.

Swedish delight

S90

When I was about five years old, my parents purchased a grey 1991 Volvo 340, a 1.4L compact five-door hatch that was renowned more for its safety than its performance. I remember it because it was one of the first cars to follow our luminous green Ford Fiesta, and because it had wipers on the headlamps. Five-year-old me was quite tickled by this – clearly some sort of mistake had been made at the factory. That marked the last time I was in a Volvo until quite recently, when I sat behind the wheel of the new S90.
